The Old Man's Job Service was started in 2001. At that time it was possible for Captains over 60 years old to find employment onboard. Since 2006, however, once you are 60 you have hit the "age barrier" and it's extremely difficult to find a new employer, except if you have AHT or some other very special knowledge or experience.
Of course, captains who have been with the same employer for 10 years or more, do not stop working when they are 60. It's only when the employer goes bankrupt or the ship is sold when you get problems. To a great extent it's the insurance companies that are causing the problems.
It has happened that some Masters over 60 have died onboard while ship was under way. That causes problems for the ship owner, especially if the Chief Officer is on the younger side and not fully competent to take command.
When the ship owner gets problems the insurance company usually has to either solve the problem or pay for the solution, which can involve putting a new Master onboard at sea, which is expensive.
The result of the lowered age barrier is that there is a shortage of experienced Masters and senior officers in many European countries, while worldwide there is an oversupply of both deck and engine crew.
After running this service for older Captains for almost 5 years, I came to the conclusion there was no more need for it. During the time this page was active there were a number of Masters who did find a new employer. Because there is no more actual need for this service, I decided to discontinue the service in January 2006.
If anybody of you have a "special problem" it doesn't mean you cannot contact me anymore. The email box stays open and is checked regularly. The rest of this website also continues as before and is still growing.
Even if there are almost no possibilities for work onboard, there is always need for experienced maritime professionals in developing countries. For those jobs 60 is not any barrier at all. Please go to Marine-Maritime Job Links. Those jobs are all land based and could in certain instances require re-location.
Or you can try my job search engine. Type as specific job description as possible. Example: marine port operations consultant job asia. Include the word "job" or "employment", otherwise the search engine doesn't "know" you are looking for a job. When you click on "Search" the search engine will check the current vacancies at all companies listed on this job site.
If you don't find what you look for today, come back next week or the week after. There is a new vacancy every day somewhere in the world.
If you happen to have your email address available on the Internet, be aware there are several money scams targeting seafarers, see Don Pedro's Nigerian and Other Money Scam Examples.
