Offshore Medical CertificatesFor offshore work you must get an "offshore medical" certificate. More information about the offshore medical in different countries.Americans should check the Medical Guidelines for Offshore Workers. Shell ( Brunei ) list of approved medical examiners for offshore medical ( fitness ) certificate - South East Asia, Western Australia; OGUK ( ex. UKOOA ) and NOGEPA registered Doctors UKOOA worldwide list of registered / authorised clinics / doctors issuing Oil & Gas UK ( OGUK = ex UKOOA ) approved offshore medical ( fitness ) certificates. Choose your nearest town / city from the list and click on "Go". The time period your offshore medical certificate is valid depends on the Authority controlling the oil field / location where you are working. UK North Sea is under the control of UKOOA and the offshore medical certificates are valid for 2 years. Individual employers can request more frequent check-ups. Safety and Survival Certificates
With the increase of floating drilling and production units there is now an increasing grey area where it's not always clear whether to apply STCW-95 or offshore certification rules. As a "rule of thumb" one can say, if a floating unit is classified as a ship STCW AND OFFSHORE certificates are required. If it's not classified as a ship only offshore certificates are mandatory and work contracts are individual, not ITF based. Safety and Survival Training Centres - BOSIET - HUETOffshore survival certificates are generally valid for 4 years, after which they have to be renewed ( one day course ). Worldwide list of Opito approved survival training centres (03/2010) [ BOSIET, HUET ]The BOSIET certificate is valid in the British North Sea sector and in many other countries. For the Norwegian and the Danish sectors must have OLF certification, which is stricter. Many UK training centres offer with the BOSIET a short additional module ( Pan-European ) to cover also OLF.

Special for Gulf of MexicoOn May 27 2010 Interior Secretary Ken Salazar ( USA ) submitted a safety report about Gulf of Mexico to President Obama. The report recommends more safety rules and more safety training programs ( certificates ) for the rig workers. May be we can expect to see the first courses emerging at the very end of this year. For installations in American waters of the Gulf of Mexico there is special documentation already implemented or still being implemented. In January 2009 both documents were required from an European ROV pilot applying for a job in the Gulf of Mexico. These two certificates are:
SafeGulf CardThe SafeGulf Card has been a requirement for contractors / sub-contractors going offshore since May 1, 2006. The training provides a minimum knowledge for contractor's personnel going out to the facilities [ i.e. hazards and safety concerns ]. The training is similar to the UK Offshore greenhand course. For additional detailed information go to SafeGulf - FAQThere are only three organizations allowed to accredit training providers ( February 2009 ) for SafeGulf or SafeGulf equivalent programs, one of which is IADC. IADC is also the organization overseeing the issue of SafeGulf Pass ( card ) TWIC cardThe TWIC card is a biometric ID card - with an electronic chip containing the individuals fingerprints. It is / will be required for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure or restricted areas of MTSA regulated facilities and vessels and all US seafarers / mariners holding USCG issued documents / licenses. Except for US seafarers it concerns also port workers / employees, long shore workers ( stevedores ), certain truck drivers, and some other personnel.Non-US flagged vessels do not have secure areas as defined by MTSA and therefore the crew on these vessels would not require TWIC. If such a vessel would be taken to a "secure / restricted area", however, the crew wouldn't be able to go ashore unescorted - except if the requirement could be waived because of an "emergency situation". For cruise ships with "passenger access" a TWIC is not required. Workers / employees who require unescorted access to secure areas and all US seafarers must enrol for a TWIC no later than April 14, 2009. The implementation started in October 2008 in some northern "Captain of the Port" zones / districts and should be completed on April 14, 2009 - Houston / Galveston being among the last ones. A TWIC is issued only to US citizens and certain foreign permanent residents who have legal work permit in US and certain Canadian and Mexican truck drivers who are allowed to transport hazardous materials inside US borders. To be eligible a person may not have been convicted of certain crimes, such as treason or terrorism against USA, or "lacking mental capacity". For additional detailed information see TWIC - FAQ. Offshore Technical Skills Training Centres and SchoolsCertificate requirements can vary by job location according to local requirements and regulations. Specific requirements to be found in each vacant job specification and employer's procedures and guidelines. It's therefore necessary to apply only for specific vacancies and exactly specify your certificates.I quote an e-mail received: "every piece of paper helps. there are so many people out there looking for jobs. even the experienced guys will not get a look in if they are requiring a specific ticket and don't have ticket. the ticket will get you on the job... it's all an insurance thing." To work as a Motorhand, Derrickhand, or Driller in (Alberta) Canada you must either be registered as a Rig Tech Apprentice or Hold a Rig Tech Journeyman Certificate. Offshore Greenhand CoursesThese are intended for new inexperienced unskilled applicants. A roustabout is an unskilled-inexperienced worker ( trainee or helper ), the position serves also as a common entry level occupation for the oil rig's marine section. To work as a roustabout you must be physically strong and accustomed to heavy manual work - even in bad weather.
The term greenhand comes from the requirement on some installations that newcomers wear a green hard hat to identify them as "new onboard" and may be not familiar with all regulations.
Crane Operators and Rigger TrainingStarting day rate ( salary ) for Crane Operators ( North Sea ) was in Jan. 2008 about UK £ 170. With a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off you would get about UK £ 2.500 per month (about US $ 5.000 per month). In May (2008) crane operators were offered € (Euro) 280 - about UK £ 215 per day in offshore Nigeria. One UK (£) GBP equals about 1.3 € (Euro) or about two USD. September 2008 banksman / slinger was offered € (Euro) 100 per day in the North Sea. Note the actual salaries paid a certain person depends on number of years of previous offshore experience and crane operator certificate level. If you are American and/or intend to work offshore in the Gulf of Mexico you need a certification called "API RD 2D Offshore Rigger". API 2P 2D is not the only requirement for Offshore cranes worldwide. Many other key standards exist within Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia. Rigging methods and signals used in USA are, for instance, not same as in Northern Europe ( North Sea ). You can get this certification also in UK. A rigger [ US legal definition ] is: "anyone who attaches or detaches lifting equipment to loads or lifting devices" on fixed offshore platforms.
